Signs You Need Differential Repairs

A differential rarely fails without warning. It tells you first, usually through noise. Each symptom below has a cause we can pin down on the hoist, and early bookings usually mean small repairs.

  • Whining that rises and falls with road speed, which points to low or contaminated oil, or worn crown wheel and pinion teeth

  • Howling only when you lift off the throttle, which usually means worn pinion bearings or lost bearing preload

Your outside wheel travels further than your inside wheel through a corner, and the diff manages that difference. Without it the car would scrub its tyres and fight you every time you turned. All-wheel-drive vehicles carry more than one, plus a centre diff or a coupling that splits torque front to rear.

Listen for whining that tracks road speed, howling when you lift off the throttle, or a clunk as you take off. Feel for vibration at highway speed and shudder in tight, slow turns. Look for gear oil stains behind the housing or on the inner tyre wall. Uneven tyre wear and a drivetrain warning light both point the same way. Any of these deserve a proper inspection.

You can, but the bill grows every kilometre. A worn bearing chews through the gear set, and low oil overheats the whole unit. In the worst case the diff seizes at speed, which loads the driveshaft and creates a genuine safety risk. Book it in as soon as the noise starts. The gap between a bearing job and a full rebuild is often only a few thousand kilometres.
